ChildSavers Legacy Society: Creating a Lasting Gift of Hope
For more than a century, ChildSavers has helped children and families heal, grow, and thrive. By including ChildSavers in your estate plans, you can ensure that future generations of children have access to the trauma-informed mental health services, early childhood programs, and family support they need to build brighter futures.
A planned gift is one of the most meaningful ways to support ChildSavers while also providing for the people and causes you care about most. With thoughtful planning, you can create a gift that reflects your values, supports your loved ones, and leaves a lasting impact on our community.
When you notify us of your planned gift, you will be welcomed into the ChildSavers Legacy Society, a special community of donors whose generosity will sustain our mission for years to come.

Why create an Estate Plan?
Creating a will or other estate plan ensures that your wishes are honored and that your assets are distributed according to your intentions.
Without a will, your estate may be divided according to state law, which may not reflect your personal wishes or charitable priorities. Through proper planning, you can:
- Provide for family members and loved ones
- Name an executor to administer your estate
- Establish trusts for financial management and potential tax advantages
- Support the charitable organizations that matter most to you
- Create a lasting legacy that reflects your values
Importantly, estate plans can be updated as life circumstances change. If you already have a will, you can modify it through a simple legal document called a codicil, allowing you to add ChildSavers to your plans without drafting an entirely new will.
Planned Giving Options
Bequests
A bequest is the simplest and most common planned giving vehicle. Through your will or living trust, you can designate a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate to ChildSavers.
Bequests allow you to:
- Retain complete control of your assets during your lifetime
- Support ChildSavers without affecting your current financial needs
- Potentially reduce estate taxes
- Create a significant future gift through resources you already own
A bequest can include cash, appreciated securities, real estate, retirement assets, or tangible personal property.
Sample Bequest Language
“I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to ChildSavers – Memorial Child Guidance Clinic, 200 N. 22nd Street, Richmond, VA 23223, for its general purposes, (all/fraction/percentage/specific dollar amount) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal.”
Retirement Plans and IRAs
Retirement plans and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are among the most tax-efficient assets to leave to charity.
By naming ChildSavers as a full or partial beneficiary, you can:
- Maintain flexibility throughout your lifetime
- Easily update beneficiary designations as circumstances change
- Potentially reduce income and estate taxes for your heirs
- Create a meaningful charitable legacy
Simply contact your retirement plan administrator and request a beneficiary designation form.
Charitable IRA Rollover
If you are age 70½ or older, you may be eligible to make a qualified charitable distribution directly from your IRA to ChildSavers. These gifts can help satisfy required minimum distributions while potentially reducing taxable income.
We encourage donors to consult their financial and tax advisors to determine whether this option aligns with their charitable and financial goals.
Life Insurance
Life insurance can be an impactful and affordable way to support ChildSavers.
You may:
- Name ChildSavers as a beneficiary of an existing policy
- Transfer ownership of a fully or partially paid policy
- Purchase a new policy with ChildSavers as beneficiary
These gifts often allow donors to make a much larger charitable contribution than they might otherwise be able to make through current assets.
Donor Advised Fund (DAFs)
A donor-advised fund is a flexible and tax-efficient charitable giving vehicle that allows donors to recommend grants to qualified nonprofits over time.
In addition to making current grants, you may designate ChildSavers as a beneficiary of your donor-advised fund, helping ensure your philanthropic goals continue beyond your lifetime.
Many donor-advised fund providers allow you to update beneficiary designations easily through their online platforms.
Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity provides fixed payments to you or a loved one for life in exchange for a charitable contribution.
Benefits may include:
- Guaranteed lifetime income
- Potential charitable income tax deductions
- Simplicity and predictability
Charitable Remainder Trusts
A charitable remainder trust allows you to place assets into a trust that provides income to you or your beneficiaries during your lifetime, with the remaining assets benefiting ChildSavers in the future.
These trusts may offer:
- Lifetime income
- Potential tax advantages
- Capital gains tax benefits on appreciated assets
- Long-term impact for children and families
Charitable Lead Trusts
A charitable lead trust provides financial support to ChildSavers for a specified period of time, after which the remaining assets pass to your heirs or other designated beneficiaries.
This strategy can be particularly beneficial for donors interested in transferring wealth while supporting charitable causes.
Gifts of Real Estate
Real estate can be an excellent asset for charitable giving. Contributions of residences, vacation homes, farmland, undeveloped property, or other real estate may provide substantial tax benefits while creating significant support for ChildSavers.
Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Donating stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have increased in value can be a tax-efficient way to make a charitable gift while avoiding certain capital gains taxes.
