Two Mothers Reach Out
This past May, Barbara Tyler and her cousin Evangeline Sydnor celebrated the 14-year anniversary of their grief counseling program Mothers Supporting Mothers Through Grief. “Since we started, we’ve counseled over 120 mothers and three fathers who have lost children to violence,” states Barbara. “We are still meeting monthly.”
Both Barbara and Evangline are no strangers to grief, having lost children themselves. Through this personal struggle with pain and suffering, the two joined forces and created a support system to help other mothers. “We…provid[e] an atmosphere where the mothers can feel comfortable expressing their grief. We share with each parent that there’s no such thing as a time limit on grief. When you love deeply, you grieve your loss, deeply,” says Barbara.
Their meetings offer an atmosphere where mothers can feel comfortable and have adequate time to express grief, encourage personal growth by identifying grief’s stages, and share experiences.
Mothers Supporting Mothers Through Grief meets monthly from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month at ChildSavers in Church Hill (200 N. 22nd Street, Richmond). Meetings on the 2nd Thursdays are intended for new participants/those interested in joining, while meetings on the 4th Thursdays are intended for current members. Please contact Barbara Tyler (beeper: 804-905-0966) or Evangeline Sydnor (804-840-5140) directly if you are interested in attending or know of someone who is interested.
While ChildSavers does not administer this program, we are pleased to help support and promote it.
