This workshop will provide the participant not only with guidelines regarding how to integrate the Creative Arts Therapies and Play Therapy but also with the rationale for modeling a love of and trust in the creative process. Participants will learn to identify clients’ natural ways of communicating to ascertain whether they are primarily visual, auditory, or kinesthetic beings and provide the appropriate expressive modalities including drawing, painting, dancing/moving, writing, and creating scenes. The workshop will include lecture, case examples, and creative experiences.
Learning Objectives
After this training participants will be able to:
- Reiterate the Importance of Play and Expressive Art Therapies being natural modalities for children
- Explain why and how the Expressive Arts Therapies are effective in adult treatment as they overcome adults' tendencies to over-think and over-talk what's happening for them
- Set up a therapeutic environment that is conducive to integrating Play Therapy with the Expressive Arts Therapies
- Comprehend the importance of creating access to supplies, guaranteeing quality of supplies, and maintaining visibility of others' Creations (on display with permission) to decrease isolation
- Appreciate the "ideal" of Moving Intermodally - from Art to Writing to Story-Telling to Enacting Drama
- Participate, without directing or interpreting, by staying attuned
- Articulate the Significance of keeping track of details. Understand and maintain a safe haven for themes that develop over time through taking notes about characters and asking for clarifications
- Explain to clients (and their parents/guardians) how art, music, acting, writing, dancing, etc. can and will always help. Articulate their belief that creative outlets should be honored and used daily to express one's authentic self.
