April 12, 2012.  Richmond, VA:  ChildSavers announced today the retirement of CEO Mark Hierholzer after 25 years of service.   Hierholzer, who is 65, will step down at the end of June, coinciding with the organization’s fiscal year end.

Founded in 1924 and formerly known as Memorial Child Guidance Clinic, ChildSavers provides comprehensive mental health and childhood development services that holistically embrace the needs of children and those who care for and educate them. The organization supports this mission with clinical treatment and education, as well as training services for those who care for children.  It is a community supported, non-profit agency licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse.

Hierholzer led the organization during a period of significant growth and change.  ChildSavers now provides outpatient mental health services to approximately 500 children annually.  In November 2004, the Trauma Response program was launched in partnership with first and second responders and has provided immediate mental health services to more than 2,200 children, helping them cope with violent or traumatic events.  Similarly, the array of Child Development Services, which improve the quality of child care and ensure children are prepared to start school, has grown its offerings to a curriculum comprised of over 100 courses serving more than 1,100 early child care professionals a year.  In 2008, after the successful completion of a $6 million capital campaign, ChildSavers moved into its state of the art Children’s Center in the former WRVA building in Church Hill.

According to board president Kirk Tattersall, “For more than 2 decades, Mark Hierholzer has dedicated himself to the mental health needs of Richmond’s children.  His leadership has guided ChildSavers through a period of rapid growth and change, enabling the organization to reach out to more and more of our community.  Countless families have benefited from the work provided by him and the talented team he assembled.”

ChildSavers will conduct a national search for Hierholzer’s replacement.
